Advanced Life Support Services
At 8:00 am on August 19, 1999, the City of Wayne Fire Department entered a new era in emergency medical service with the implementation of Advanced Life Support. Paramedics will provide the highest level of pre-hospital care to residents and visitors of Wayne.
Following an extensive six-month training program, all of Wayne Firefighters have been licensed by the State of Michigan to practice emergency medical care as paramedics. The training included 300 hours of classroom instruction, 150 hours of clinical rotations at area emergency rooms, and 150 hours of hands on experience with ALS rescue units from several fire departments surrounding Wayne.
Paramedics make up the highest level of pre-hospital care providers. These practitioners extend some of the most crucial capabilities of the hospital emergency department to the field. Paramedics are proficient in monitoring heart rhythms, delivering precise electrical therapy (defibrillation) to patients suffering certain abnormal rhythms, preparing and administering a number of emergency medications and providing more advanced respiratory support. A paramedic's level of expertise in assessing patients is significantly enhanced and a direct radio link to the receiving hospital emergency department provides an opportunity for consultation and direction from emergency medicine physicians.
This Service definitely provides a higher quality of life for the community of Wayne!
Paramedics conduct blood pressure checks at the Wayne Senior Center on the third Thursday of each month at 10:30 am.

Hello, Wayne Citizen, visitor or soon-to-be Wayne resident! Wayne extends a heartfelt welcome to you!
