Fire Prevention
The City of Wayne Fire Department has one full time Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal, who among other duties, is in charge of the fire inspections division for the City of Wayne. Working directly with the Fire Marshal are three certified State of Michigan Fire Inspectors, who are also shift Lieutenants. The City has recently updated, the current Fire Prevention Code which is defined in Chapter 1610 of the City of Wayne Codified Ordinances. The updates are as follows:
2000 edition of National Fire Protection Association #1, NFPA Fire Prevention Code, including mandatory referenced NFPA publications listed in Chapter 32.
2000 edition of National Fire Protection Association #101, Life Safety Code, including mandatory referenced NFPA publications listed in
Chapter 2.
1998 edition of National Fire Protection Association #1141, Planned Building Groups.
1976 fire Prevention Code, as recommended by the American Insurance Association.
City of Wayne requires by law all residential homes to have a working smoke detector outside every sleeping area and one on each level of the home. Please check your smoke detectors every month to ensure that they are working properly and change the batteries at least twice a year. If assistance in needed in changing the batteries, please contact the Fire Department and someone will come out to give you a hand.
Remember, "CHANGE YOUR CLOCK, CHANGE YOUR BATTERY!"
The Wayne Fire Department has many fire prevention and public education programs and activities to help reduce and prevent the number of emergencies in the community. The Fire Department teaches many fire prevention messages to people of all ages. The following are some of the fire prevention services the department currently performs:
- Fire Inspections
- Rental Fire Inspections
- Fire Safety Lectures
- CPR Classes
- Juvenile Firesetter Program
- Fire Extinguisher training
- Fire Station Tours
Each year during the month of October, the Wayne Fire Department conducts fire prevention assemblies in each of the six elementary schools and gives station tours to various private schools and interested groups. The FD utilities many different outlets to deliver our fire safety message to students. Many people have experienced Sergeant Smoke the puppet, Hector the Smoke Detector, The "Great" Firedeannie a magician, and this past year SpongeBob "Safety" Pants helped out with Sparky the Fire Dog.
These assemblies reaced over 2000 students stressing the importance of home fire escape planning and the need to practice the plan.
Most people underestimate fire’s power and speed, and making individuals aware of this is vitally important. In the best case, you only have just one or two minutes to escape a typical home fire safely. Home fire escape planning and practice are critical to life safety because they ensure that everyone knows how to use those minutes wisely and escape unharmed.
You may also find more fire safety and public education materials by check the NFPA or FEMA for Kids web sites
In order to offset the cost for these programs the Fire Department Public Education Department conducts fundraisers and excepts donations at the Fire Department.
If you or your business require a specialized fire safety training, please contact the Fire Department at 734-722-1111 to discuss your needs.
